Thrustmaster VG 4160545 Review by Amazoned (California)

I've been searching for a steering wheel with pedals and a supporting beam, but for kids as young as 4 year old and 36 inches tall. There are plastic wheels securing steering column to small base to put between kids thighs for Wii (controller insert type), but non for PS3. Also I didn't want to build a frame for my kids that will grow out of it in matter of months. So I kept searching for many months, until I found this set.

I was very happy that with steering wheel column in most compact mode. My youngest boy (about 3 feet tall) can sit on a kids chair, with hands on the wheel and feet on both pedals! So cute seeing this is possible! And this set will even allow someone over 6 feet as well.

The whole unit looks pretty robust, which appears to be mostly metal for the steering column and the base. This is also why it's kinda of heavy (which is actually good). It is a beautiful set.

The wireless is nice and portability is an extra benefit to take to relatives house. there is no force feedback as this is run on batteries - not important for me as this was for my younger kids.

The next most important thing is game compatibility. The buttons and pedals do map to controllers (not custom steering wheels). Standard mapping fit in some common games like GT5 Prologue, GRiD, NFS variations. Some games have button remapping support, so these games can work with this steering wheel/pedal set. But simple/kids games like Cars Race O Roma don't have in game mapping function, so I used the mapping function on the steering wheel itself to map accelerator and brake/reverse to the pedals. I sent questions to support (in Europe) and got response back within few days for mapping to different games.

Buttons on the steering wheel can be mapped to other buttons on the wheel and to the pedals. But pedals cannot map to the buttons! This hurts some of the preset functions mapped to L3/R3 (pedals) that need to remap to other buttons, before remapping buttons to pedals.

I give it 4 stars because it's the only set out there that my younger kids can use for PS3 games. But if this game is for an adult, I would give it 2 stars because all the mapping challenges. If you are a serious gamer and need force feedback, look for a wired model.

Buying this item is worth it for hard core car race gamers. Unlike the other same platform where you have to find a sturdy desk then mount it, this Thrustmaster Ferrari Wireless F430 Cockpit is an all-in-one and can both be used on PS3 & PCs. Within a month of enjoying this expensive toy, the brake pedal started to feel weird that game play is affected. Since it was still within warranty, I mailed this back to it's HQ in Canada (they don't have one here in the U.S.). They fixed it and mailed my toy back to me and I continued enjoying this toy for a couple of months more. Just recently, that same problem popped up again and since it's out of warranty - i might have to fix this myself. Fun is 5 stars, quality 3 stars.

I have always respected thrustmaster as the very best quality in joysticks going back decades as i have been a gamer for over 30 years. Their f16 joystck was identical to the real thing except a real fighter stick only moves a fraction of an inch. I flew a real military grade simulator once many years ago. Thrustmasters quality of heavy duty construction was undeniable. You could really punish it while playing without fear of breaking the stick.
I purchased the f430 scuderia edition driving set from costco on black friday for 199.00. They no longer carry it. It arrived and took 5 minutes to setup comfortably. There was a very evident looseness in the steering wheel to main shaft. The wheel seperates from the shaft of the base for ease of transport. The whole set is heavily weighted but can still walk on you a bit during spirited use.
The looseness i had was due to poor quality chinese construction. I complained to costco and they arranged for a replacement. The replacement was somewhat tighter but not as i felt it should be. I still wanted to keep it anyway so i hooked it up. The unit worked well for 2 minutes or so then failed to work with the ps3 via wireless connection. I repacked the replacement and sent that one back. I am going to send back the first one too. The unit is a great idea but the manufacturing quality is suspect. The wireless usb plug in on the first model was poorly made and cockeyed where it joins the ps3. It functioned though it looked like 2-3 cents were spent on making it. As the replacement set failed to work with the ps3 after a few minutes usage, the problem was probably there. I hope thrustmaster quality control in china gets better because this model is worthy.
All control buttons are programmable on gran turismo 5 and it is great fun to use. The controls allow you to completely control the ps3 from the wheel without need of the handheld controller usually used. I cannot advise you to buy or not to buy as i enjoyed the set so much i really dont want to send back the first one and be without it, however the poor fit on the wheel to shaft and the second units failure to work is a serious indicator of poor quality of manufacturing. This is unacceptable for a two hundred dollar item. Your decision here, just know if you get it you may have to exchange it and possibly several times at that until you get a good one. If you get a good one you will love it if you play gt5. I did not try it on anything but gt5 and gt prologue.
